Heal Charlotte 5 Core Values
When communities come together to solve issues that impact them, the solutions and interventions are more sustainable, relevant, and relatable to the lived experiences of those community residents. The ReCAST vision supports community change through resilience and trauma-informed approaches that promote community and youth engagement, leadership development, improved governance, and capacity building centered around violence prevention. On June 25th, Heal Charlotte, in partnership with ReCAST, will host a one-day citywide Stop the Violence event to transform dialogue around violence prevention. Additional community partners include Novant Health, Walmart, faith-based organizations, Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department, Charlotte Mecklenburg Health Department, Moms Demand Action, BYE, the District Attorney’s office, government officials, and other grassroots organizations committed to uplifting the mission of the event. This event will inform and engage community members about the impact of violence on Mecklenburg County through arts, training sessions, lectures, and Healing Stations.
Violence is a public health crisis that directly impacts youth and families in Mecklenburg County. Mecklenburg County has experienced a significant increase in homicides since 2016, with most homicide victims and perpetrators being black males between the ages of 14 and 24. Observing, witnessing, and experiencing violence creates trauma, prevents community members from fully thriving, and impacts their health and overall well-being. Trauma-informed approaches are a way to support the Mecklenburg community by addressing multiple factors that affect violence, including individual, peer, family, and parent relationships, community influences, and societal factors. This event aims to educate the community about the impact of violence in Mecklenburg County, promote violence prevention strategies, and support community change by advocating healing.
